Involving You was established in 2023 by Louise Bowman and Adrienne Hannah. This initiative emerged in response to the cessation of public funding for the Scottish Drug Forum’s sexual health training, which had been aimed at staff supporting vulnerable groups who also used substances. It was surprising that a decade of funding ended while issues such as the HIV outbreak among injecting drug users, increases in abortions and STIs since lockdown, and the negative impacts of pornography, social media, steroid use, and transgender debates persisted.
Between us, we have spent decades advancing sexual health and working within the drug field. Initially, we believed we could seamlessly continue where we left off, but we underestimated the market. Many previous trainees were unaware of the cost of training, and local funders were accustomed to receiving it for free. We identified a gap and sought to reach parents, as feedback consistently highlighted our ability to empower people to discuss sex and drugs effectively.
Our approach emphasises the importance of engaging training methods. We recognise that no one benefits from being passively talked at for hours. We believe in involving participants to ensure learning without boredom. As Benjamin Franklin famously said, “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” This quote encapsulates the ethos of Involving You and the motivation behind our name. Our training is designed to be fresh, fun, and memorable, equipping people with the confidence to address difficult and emotional topics effectively.
We are Scotland's only dedicated sex and drug trainers and are part of a network called PRAXXIS. Our services support parents and carers, public service staff, third sector workers, workplace providers, and employers. We collaborate with community groups to extend our reach and impact.
